## What this is

Lifetime Pet Cost v1 is a static Astro site. Calculators run in the browser. There is no account system and no paid data API.

It is not a veterinarian. It is not an insurance broker. It does not publish symptom or treatment pages. It does not invent shelf prices: if a dollar cannot be cited to a dated public source, the cell is null and the user types a local price.

## Default 12-year TCO hook

The lifetime calculator defaults to a Labrador Retriever (AKC official standard working weights; default 67.5 lb is the midpoint of the combined 55–80 lb range). The 12-year total splits food + routine vet + insurance premium + incident reserve. The engine cites every input. Bag price and incident reserve default to null.

Insurance uses NAPHIA 2024 U.S. accident & illness average premiums, labelled as an industry average, not a quote. Coverage is not promised. No “best” carrier is named. The premium line can be toggled off.

Routine vet uses AVMA 2024 average visit cost ($214 dogs, $138 cats) × visits/year.

Food mass uses NRC 2006 MER equations and manufacturer ME kcal/kg from fetched Purina Guaranteed Analysis / label PDFs.
