How the calculations work

Method

Published defaults are linked to dated sources. Other inputs, including the planning period, visit frequency, bag size, and local prices, are assumptions you choose. Review the scope before interpreting a result.

Daily energy (NRC / AAFCO)

Body weight in pounds is converted with the international pound: kg = lb × 0.45359237. Daily metabolizable-energy need uses NRC 2006 equations as summarized in the SciELO review of NRC and in the MSD Veterinary Manual (which also states AAFCO nutrient profiles on an ME basis and the clinical RER = 70 × BW_kg^0.75 starting point):

MSD also lists MER as a multiple of RER (neutered adult dog 1.6 × RER; neutered adult cat 1.2 × RER). This calculator uses the NRC 2006 coefficient forms above so the worked sheet can name one equation. Any MER is a starting point; individuals vary.

Bags per year

kg/day = MER / (kcal per kg of dry food). kg/year = kg/day × 365. Bags/year = kg/year / bag_kg. Bag size is a packing input, not a price. Food dollars = bags/year × bag price only when you type a local price.

Selected care spending = food + veterinary visits + optional insurance premiums, with each annual amount multiplied by the planning period. Unpriced expense lines are identified beside the partial subtotal. Emergency savings contributions are shown separately and are not treated as spending.

Routine vet

Default is one visit per year at the AVMA 2024 average visit cost ($214 dogs, $138 cats), from AVMA News coverage of the 2024 Pet Ownership and Demographic Sourcebook. About 80% of visits in that survey were routine checkup or preventive care. Household annual veterinary totals ($580 dogs, $433 cats) are listed on Prices for context and are not the default line, because they mix wellness and sick care.

Insurance premium

Default on: NAPHIA 2025 State of the Industry public highlights, U.S. 2024 accident & illness average premium ($749.29 dogs, $386.47 cats). Labelled as an industry average, not a quote. Coverage is not promised. This calculator does not name a best carrier.

Emergency savings

Enter an optional annual savings target. Contributions are reported separately from selected care expenses; they are not a prediction of emergency bills.

Breed weights

Adult ranges come from fetched AKC official standards or, where the standard has no pounds, the AKC Breed Weight Chart (April 26, 2023), Wikipedia breed pages, CFA, or PetMD — from the references listed below. Beagle pounds are not taken from the AKC chart’s 15–13 lb row, which tracks the 13-inch and 15-inch height varieties.

How the expanded budget adds up

Ongoing annual spending = the selected annual food, vet and insurance amounts + 12 times the additional monthly expenses. Monthly spending is the annual figure divided by 12, displayed to cents. Setup purchases count once.

First-year spending = ongoing annual spending + setup. Planning-period spending = annual spending × selected years + setup. Savings contributions are shown separately and added only in the cash-allocation figure. Blank amounts are excluded from known subtotals and listed as unpriced. Enter 0 only for costs that do not apply.

Scenario comparisons preserve two snapshots in the current tab. They do not predict future prices, treatment needs or lifespan. Printed plans include the entered allowances, missing items and calculation notes.
